The Economic Impact of the Child Care Industry in North Carolina North Carolina’s child care industry directly supports the employment of over 46,000 people and generates over $15 billion in gross receipts according to a study released by North Carolina Partnership and the National Economic Development and Law Center (NEDLC). In Hertford County, gross receipts in the child care industry total $15,094,435, and child care has a workforce of 117. Kellogg Foundation. Researchers from NEDLC assessed the direct and indirect impact of the child care industry has on North Carolina’s economy. Child Care that is legal but is not licensed was not included in the study. Data specific to Hertford County reveals that 1,458 children between birth and age five living in Hertford County last year, and 373, or 33.2 percent were living below the poverty level, according to figures from the 2000 Census. Hertford County has 530 children in licensed/regulated child care, 24 licensed/regulated homes, and 11 licensed/regulated centers.
